CBD Overview

CBD Overview was built to provide a high-level view of CBD performance in a market.

How and when to use this dashboard.
Use this dashboard to see a broad overview across all 5 CBD categories for a particular market. For the following example visualizations, we’ll be looking at Colorado over the previous year as of June 2020.

*Please Note, some visualizations will observe the time range filter you set in the dashboard and some will not. For clarification, the "i" in the small circle to the right of the title of the tile. These will indicate whether the date range filter is observed.

CBD Definition:
At Headset, we have defined CBD products as non-inhalable products that contain CBD. Each product has been classified with its mg of THC and CBD and these classifications are presented accordingly.

Products are presented as:

  • CBD Only
  • CBD: THC Ratio
  • THC Heavy (products with more mg of THC than CBD)

Included Categories:
The included categories are Beverages, Capsules, Edibles, Topicals, Tinctures & Sublingual.

CBD Product Sales and Market Share
This graph answers questions like, ‘What are the total sales in this region by month?’, and, ‘What percentage of total cannabis market share is accounted for by CBD products as defined here?’. And, “How are these values changing over the last months?'”

Total sales are represented by the vertical bars. Hover over any vertical bar to read the monthly sales for that month. These correspond with the scale in millions along the left vertical axis. The Market Share values indicated by the dark dotted line correspond with the vertical axis on the right side of the graph. Hover over any point on the line to see the market share value for any particular month.

In August 2019, 35.1% of products sold in Colorado were CBD products, and sales of these products top out on the graph below at just over $8.4 million.

Average Item Price and Unit Share
As CBD’s share of overall unit volume for this region changes, is there a correlation with a change in average item price (AIP)? This graph will help you begin to answer that question. We see CBD Product Unit Market Share along the right axis and illustrated by the darker line, and AIP along the left axis and shown in the lighter-colored line.

CBD Market Share and Total Sales by Category
For the date range selected in your DATE RANGE filter, the vertical bars here illustrate the CBD product's % of sales along with the dollar value for CBD product sales.

For example, 21.3% of all Edible products sold in Colorado for the last 365 days (June 2019 to June 2020) were CBD products. The total dollar amount of Edible CBD product sales was nearly $40.6 million, as shown at the top of the vertical bar for the Edibles category below. Note the product sales correspond with the left axis, and % of sales corresponds with the right vertical axis.

CBD Sales by Category
This stacked bar chart shows the proportion of CBD categories changing since 2016. All but one of the categories are expanding year over year. To closely examine fewer, or just a single category click on an item in the legend to disable it. Alternatively, use Alt-click on an item in the legend to see only that category.

CBD % of Category Sales
This graph shows the percentage of CBD sales as a percentage of total category sales. How important is CBD to the growth of a particular category? This graph will help you answer this question. In April 2020, 84% of Topicals were CBD products. And, at the highest point, in October of 2019, 89% of the Tincture and Sublingual category’s sales were CBD products.

Average Item Price over Time
This graph shows that since January of 2016 AIP for all combined CBD products is higher than their THC-only products in our 5 non-inhalable categories. Are consumers willing to pay for CBD products in recreational stores?

Category Average Item Price
How does CBD products’ AIP compare to the AIP for products containing only THC? Is there a premium to be paid for any product that contains THC if CBD is added to it? Answer these questions with this graph. The THC-only products are shown in the lighter color, and the CBD products are shown in the darker color. This graph does observe the time frame filter so go ahead and update your date range and press the run button to examine these values across different time frames.

Category EQ Price
CBD products’ EQ price is the price per milligram of THC, and is compared to THC-only products in the graph below. This graph also respects the time frame filter.

Average Item Price Box Plot
A box plot displays the distribution of average item prices within a segment. (This graph reflects your selection in the Date Range filter). Boxplots are useful when you want to summarize a large dataset and compare the distribution of a point estimate (i.e. an average item price). Hover over any of the entries to see the following values in the popup.

Min: The lower band of prices in the category
Q1: The first Quartile; 25% of products are priced below this price
Median: Denotes the mid-point of the data. The best representation of the central point in the data.
Q3: The third Quartile; 75% of products are priced below this price
Max: The upper band of the price in the category

EQ Price by CBD: THC Ratio
How do prices of products change by the ratio of CBD to THC in the product? This graph displays the price per mg of THC so that you may analyze how the price of a product (normalized for the amount of THC) is altered by the ratio of CBD to THC in it. The average Item Price tells you the price per unit purchased. However, with package sizes varying greatly a more granular view of price, such as EQ price (or price per equalized unit), can give a clearer picture. For non-inhalable products, we define EQ price as price per mg of THC.

New CBD Product Sales
What new CBD products are coming to market in each of our categories? And of those new products, what is the prevalence of the CBD ratios? This graph shows sales of products introduced to the market in the last 180 days by category. Hover over any of the vertical bars to see further details such as sales in local currency and the percentage of the category by THC ratio.

New Products Sold
Are new products with CBD holding a higher average item price than those with THC only? How many new products of each type have been introduced lately, and how many have been introduced within the last 6 months?

The New Products Sold graph compares the average item price and the number of new products in the market for THC Only This graph uses 3 fixed time ranges. On the left, we can see data related to products appearing in the market within the last 90 days. In the middle, we see details of products introduced between 91 and 180 days ago. The far-right comparison shows data for products more than 6 months old. The lighter-colored vertical bar (or the numeral, if the scale doesn’t allow the vertical bar to appear) represents the number of products, and the darker vertical bar represents the average item price. Notice in the graph below the AIP for CBD products is only slightly larger than THC Only products (25.26 vs. 22.67, a roughly 10% difference) compared to products released more than 180 days ago (24.08 vs 15.92, a roughly 33% difference).

Total Category Sales by CBD: THC Ratio
What are the dominant CBD: THC ratios in each of our 5 categories? The legend below shows 1:1 in red is the dominant ratio, but after that, there’s quite a mix. How do consumer preferences vary across these different categories? Notice the large difference, for example, between Topicals and Beverages where after the 1:1 ratio very few of the ratios match in size.

CBD Product Sales
Sankey Charts depict the flow of sales from one set to another. This Sankey displays the sales volume of CBD products by category, total THC mg in the package, and CBD:THC ratio. Wider bands show more sales.
Hover over any grouping to highlight the total sales that group represents.

CBD: THC Ratio Sales
What is the right CBD: THC ratio for consumers? This chart looks at only this question, and by year. Note the years listed vertically along the left side of this chart, with 2020 at the top and 2016 at the bottom of these horizontal representations. One clear standout is the shrinking amount of ‘Pure CBD’ (in lime green). Is this because hemp-derived CBD with no THC is sold more often in stores outside of the recreational cannabis world? On the other hand, there’s a sizable chunk of 20:1; and of course, if all 5 of the years are represented here (although we’re only halfway through 2020 at this writing) the 1:1 is extremely dominant.
